From the early people of Costa Rica to the societies of the ancient Maya, world-renowned Archaeologist and Mayanist Payson Sheets will discuss Sustainable Adaptations to Tropical Environments.
Professor Sheets will describe how sustainability, and egalitarianism, were accomplished for very long periods in ancient Central America. He will start with people and their societies in Costa Rica, in spite of repeated volcanic disasters created by Arenal volcano. Then he will turn to the Maya, and see how their experience was so similar with their isolated villages, and so different when the city states, such as Tikal, emerged.
