About this Event
Directed by Alan Parker, the film takes place before and during World War II, telling the story of Jack McGurn (Dennis Quaid), an Irish American labor organizer who moves to Los Angeles in 1936. He works as a projectionist at a movie theater owned by a Japanese American family, where he falls for Lily Kawamura (Tamlyn Tomita), the owner’s daughter. Their relationship faces strong opposition from Lily’s father, who disapproves due to cultural and racial tensions.
Determined to be together, Jack and Lily elope to Seattle, marry, and have a daughter named Mini. But their joy is cut short when the attack on Pearl Harbor leads to the forced internment of Japanese Americans, including Lily and her family, who are sent to a camp in Manzanar, California. Jack, drafted into the army, is unable to protect them from this injustice. The film captures the heartbreak of lost civil liberties and the sting of racism during a turbulent time in American history.
The movie runs for about 2 hours and 18 minutes and is rated R for its subject matter and brief nudity.
