English-speaking genealogists are frequently daunted by the challenges of researching their Polish ancestry, given that genealogical documents and historical records were written in Polish, Russian, German, or Latin, depending on time and location. This lecture will provide a brief overview of the history and geography which will determine the languages required for research in a particular location, followed by an introduction to the available types of translation aids and assistance. Tips and strategies for deciphering foreign-language records will be included. Attendees will be equipped to develop informed research plans based on their desired degree of independence in researching.Julie Roberts Szczepankiewicz is a genealogist, writer, and speaker with nearly 30 years of experience in researching her family’s origins in Poland, Germany, the U.S., and Canada. She currently serves as President of the Polish Genealogical Society of New York State and Vice-President for the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium. Her articles have been published in the newsletters of a number of Polish genealogical societies in the U.S., as well as the Western New York Genealogical Society, and she is the author of a genealogy blog, From Shepherds and Shoemakers.
