“The Fractal” is an experimental music and dance ensemble dedicated to complete improvisation, described by bassist Robert Strickland as “a free exploration into the musically improbable.” With no pre-set structure, their performances unfold spontaneously, blending avant-garde jazz and movement in a unique artistic experience.Strickland, a Florida native with over 40 years of experience, is deeply rooted in jazz and the avant-garde. He is joined by saxophonist David Pate, a fixture in the Tampa Bay jazz scene who emerged from the 1980s New York City loft scene and has played with icons like Sam Rivers and Nat Adderley. Drummer Jim Stewart, a Pinellas County native, has performed with Helios Jazz Orchestra, Evan Parker, and Sam Rivers.
The ensemble takes an even bolder step by incorporating dance into its improvisations, featuring Helen French, a Juilliard-trained dancer with credits including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and performances in Italy. Strickland, also a published poet, sought to merge music and movement, making The Fractal a true fusion of sound and expression.
