The first weekend of May the Green Mountain Monteverdi Ensemble of Vermont (GMMEV) will be performing perhaps the greatest piece of music composed before the time of Bach: Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine, more commonly known as the Vespers of 1610. Monteverdi was a true innovator, combining virtuoso instrumental and vocal lines over a foundation of plainchant melodies in a way never done before. The result is astonishingly beautiful music.Unlike other recent performances of this piece, GMMEV features an all-Vermont cast of vocalists. GMMEV's soloists are joined by Counterpoint, Vermont's professional vocal ensemble. The world-class orchestra comprises brass and string players from the Montreal area, supported by top-notch continuo players from Vermont and the Boston area.
