Definition of a monotype: A single print taken from a design created in suitable printing media on a surface and transferred onto paper using an etching press.
An A3 size black and white portrait will be created with printing ink and turpentine on a Polycarbonate surface and printed on an A2 sheet of Fabriano etching paper. The monotype will yield one single print and one ‘ghost’ print from the same surface.
An A3 black and white copy of each participant’s chosen portrait picture underneath the transparent polycarbonate surface will act as a guide to work from.
Participants are therefore required to bring a black and white copy of their portrait within an A3 format (i.e a cell phone portrait picture printed on A3 paper at Post Net will do). The background is not important as only the portrait will be created.
Materials
All materials will be provided, including two A2 seize sheets of Fabriano etching paper.
Extra A2 Fabriano paper sheets at R50.00 each will be available to buy for those participants who work fast and want to make additional prints.
A range of small paintbrushes will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own favourite small to medium brushes along.
Tips
Experiment with expressive portraits, selfies or otherwise, taken from different angles with, for example, a light source such as from the sun, to achieve contrast. Participants may bring along more than one copy if assistance is needed for choosing one.
The size of the portraits must not exceed A3 and may be head and shoulders or according to individual preference.

Avoid teeth for this exercise as they are notoriously difficult to paint or draw
