You're invited to a mini folk festival of a birthday party for Monique Clare's album 'Sight' at the iconic Lefty's Music Hall, complete with a string ensemble, choir and an Irish tunes rave. It's been two years since the launch of Monique's debut album, and in that time 'Sight' has earned a QLD Music Award, contemporary album of the year at the Australian Folk Music Awards, a feature on ABC's The Music Show, four stars from Rhythms Magazine and a West End Film Festival award. It’s about time we celebrate!
First we dive deep into the album, with some of the original immersive arrangements from the recording brought to life for the first time in a live setting. Swirling strings, thickly-woven vocal harmonies, and intimate solo sections that bloom out into kaleidoscopic orchestrations. We pull back the curtain for some real talk on the experiences and stories that led to these songs, and what’s changed since writing them. We play a fun game of “Monique Clare Bingo” - will she knock her water bottle over on stage? How many times will she forget the lyrics to songs she’s sung thousands of times before? Will she open her mouth say something coherent only to deliver utter gibberish?! And with any luck, some of us will cry at some point. Then laugh.
Finally we dance our way out of that emotional rollercoaster, led by Irish band Amaidí, who have inspired many a mosh pit rave at folk festivals around Australia. If you’ve ever been to Woodford Folk Festival, you know what’s up!
MONIQUE CLARE
Wielding a cello and striking vocals, Monique Clare delivers impactful indie-folk. From tears to belly laughs, she weaves a cathartic story of grief and love. With a smile as wide as the Cheshire cat's, a tendency to reveal her deepest secrets onstage, and a powerful presence born of years touring with The Maes and playing cello for everyone from Kate Miller-Heidke to Eminem, her live show is offbeat and mesmerising.
