About this Event
Ernest Melton is one of Kansas City's rising voices on the saxophone. A gospelinfluenced musician from North Carolina, Melton moved to Kansas City to immerse himself in the local jazz scene, quickly establishing himself as a serious composer and bandleader. His album "The Time of the Slave Is Over," released in 2018, showcases complex compositions inspired by jazz legends like John Coltrane and Miles Davis — the kind of deep, thoughtful music that invites multiple interpretations.
Melton's approach to music is about more than technical mastery; it's about communication and pushing boundaries. His performances are marked by aggressive energy, sophisticated harmonic thinking, and a commitment to honoring the tradition while moving it forward.
For this Monday Night Jam Session, Melton will perform a 45-minute set, then open the stage for other musicians to join him in an open jam. It's a chance to hear a serious Kansas City jazz artist in the intimate setting of the Blue Room, and to witness the collaborative spirit that defines the city's jazz culture.
