Molly McClain and Alan Hess Present - The Birth of Modernism: Irving J. Gill & His Patron E.B. Scripps
Alan Hess, an architect, historian, and author known for his expertise in Modern architecture, highlights how Irving J. Gill perfected an architecture of simplicity even before the Bauhaus movement, setting the foundation for Modernism with reinforced concrete. Historian Molly McClain will discuss Gill's collaboration with Ellen Browning Scripps, which produced five significant buildings in La Jolla, including the Bishop’s School. The lecture will be followed by a tour of Gill’s works on the Bishops campus.
