Have you ever passed by a group of people drumming and dancing with abandon, and wished you could join in? They’re playing just for the joy of creating.
In this session, we will explore what drum circles are about by alternately participating and discussing the experience. No prior knowledge is needed. We’ll provide Djembes (African hand drums) and other percussive instruments, but you’re welcome to bring any instruments you have as well. We’ll start with creating some simple beats, cover some basics of playing hand drums, and learn a few rhythms commonly played in circles.
The focus will be on how to create interest and variety with free-form groups, where no particular rhythm is being played. Along the way, we’ll delve into what this experience is all about, what’s healthy about it, and leave you with some resources, should you want to find or start your own group.
We’ll be discussing the following topics:
• What defines a ‘drum circle’, in this context?
• What’s the history of this cultural phenomenon?
• Who can participate? What knowledge is needed?
• What health benefits are associated with participation in group drumming,
and recreational music in general? Let’s take a look at some studies involving
depression, well-being, aging, dementia, and related topics.
• What do these gatherings offer to a neighborhood or other community?
• Community drumming as a personal religion.
• Examples:
Nantucket Drum Circle.
Chiang Mai Drum Circle.
We’ll also experience what kinds of music we can create, without any real need to learn traditional ethnic rhythms, or practice Djembe technique. Even with novice participants, there are ways to keep jam sessions interesting, let everyone feel heard and included, and develop musical intuition and creativity.
• The role of a facilitator (as opposed to instructor or leader).
• Basics of how to hold and play a djembe.
• Creating ‘grounding rhythms’.
• Promoting variety.
• Volume.
• Tempo.
• Other percussion instruments.
• Meter.
• Example patterns commonly played at circles (kuku, fanga, dembow,
etc…).
• Soloing: structures that allow for individual creativity.
• Orbiting break.
• Orbiting quartets.
• Groove circle.
• Games that develop musical intuition.
• Mindfulness in a group rhythmic context: the ‘Blind jam’.
• Resources for further exploration.
The session will be practical most of the time, however attendees will be provided with material to take notes.
About the facilitator:
Mark Palmer has been participating and facilitating recreational music for almost 40 years, since his first Grateful Dead concert in 1983. For the past decade, he has equipped and hosted the Nantucket Drum Circle, on Nantucket Island. He has studied West African drumming and djembe with a variety of teachers, and Taiko drumming with Odaiko New England for 3 years. His academic background is in Computer Science with an MSCS from Brown University. Mark has created a few experimental music projects over the years including quotezart.com, which translated stock prices into musical notes in real time.
He is currently developing an app to enable the spontaneous creation of music by groups using just smartphones, which is modeled on drum circle participation.
