Modfellows Gallery is thrilled to announce, "Icons of the Toybox," an exciting new exhibition featuring the captivating paintings of Robert Hightower. This collection merges childhood nostalgia with contemporary critique, blending impressions from TV shows, cartoons, films, and toys into striking works of art. Hightower's pieces evoke a sense of superposition, layering these elements into compositions that invite intense meditation and admiration.
Traditionally, icon paintings center on a singular object, or a group arranged in a classical triangular composition, often with a focus on religious figures. However, Hightower reinterprets this tradition for the modern age, reflecting our contemporary society's obsession with material possessions and the American Dream. Toys, in his work, become symbols that whitewash the past and embody the dreams we are sold from an early age. Among his earliest memories are objects like a G.I. Joe, a Big Wheel, and plastic Cowboys and Indians, which now serve as powerful icons in his paintings.
This exhibition marks Hightower's second solo show at Modfellows Art Gallery, following his acclaimed debut, "The Apocalypse Simulacra."
Robert Hightower, a native of Atlanta, received his BFA in sculpture from the University of Georgia. After graduation, he moved to New York City, where he participated in The Bronx Museum of the Art’s AIM Fellowship. In New York, Hightower expanded his artistic practice to include art installations and the creation of unique spaces. His portfolio boasts numerous bespoke homes, penthouses, and restaurants, showcasing his talent for merging artistic vision with functional design.
"Icons of the Toybox" will be on view from July 27th to Sept 7th at Modfellows Art Gallery. Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, July 27th 6-9 pm where Robert Hightower will be present to discuss his work.
