Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for an evening exploring Modernisms an exhibition curated by J. Susan Isaacs that presents the work of artists responding to modernist ideas through a wide range of approaches. Featured artists include Florence H. Austrian Jacob Glushakow Gladys Goldstein Mervin Jules Reuben Kramer Perna Krick Herman Maril Karl Metzler Selma L. Oppenheimer Amalie Rothschild Aaron Sopher Edward Rosenfeld and Peter Scholleck—largely drawn from JMM’s collection. Their work was shaped by major 20th-century art movements including Post-Impressionism Fauvism German Expressionism Cubism Art Deco Surrealism and Bauhaus. Artist Jacob Glushakow described many in this group as “a school of Baltimore Jewish artists” that thrived for more than thirty years.
Attendees will have the opportunity to view the exhibition in JMM’s new Cohen-Weinberg Gallery hear remarks from Exhibits Manager Katie Andril and listen to a conversation between curator J. Susan Isaacs and educator George Ciscle. Guests are also invited to visit the Museum’s newly opened Production Studio.
 
About the Speakers:
Katie Andril is the Exhibits Manager at JMM overseeing exhibition logistics and project management. Her background includes roles at U.S. Art Company Framebridge and The Art League in Alexandria Virginia.
J. Susan Isaacs is a curator and art historian who recently retired from Towson University where she taught art history and museum studies. She has curated exhibitions across the U.S. and abroad and writes regularly on modern and contemporary art.
George Ciscle is a longtime curator and educator who founded The Contemporary an experimental “un-museum” in Baltimore. He has promoted the work of emerging artists for more than five decades.
Kosher refreshments beer and wine will be served.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Accessibility:
The Museum building is wheelchair accessible including an all-gender family-friendly single-stall restroom. Masks are welcome but not required. Complimentary masks will be available for anyone who would like one.

Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood.
