About this Event

What role did empire have in influencing literary modernism in the early C20th? How did writers depict, question, and critique the ideology of colonialism? And what is the lasting impact of modernist styles of writing on contemporary literature?

Students from across the School of Classics, English and History are invited to discuss such questions in an informal and open reading group, led by Matt Whittle, Derek Ryan, and Ariane Mildenberg. Limited places available so please sign up! No prior knowledgle of colonial history or modernist literature is expected.

This Summer Term event is part of the Centenary of Joseph Conrad, who sailed across the world during the height of colonialism before settling in Kent to write novels, novellas and short stories based on his experiences, becoming one of the most celebrated and influential writers of the C20th. To give us a jumping off point, we'll be discussing Conrad's short story 'An Outpost of Progress' (1897), which is set in the Congolese jungle and deals with issues such as slavery, racism, isolation, and madness. A pdf will be provided - please read the story in advance.
