On July 20, 1969 at 4:17 PM EDT Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin successfully landed on the moon at Tranquility Base. A few hours later, at 10:56 PM EDT, 238,900 miles away a command center in Houston received the transmission “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” as Neil Armstrong stepped out onto the moon’s surface.
Presented by Karen Kincaid Brady, M.S.H.P., Preservation Moon will look at this historic moment through communications with the command center in Houston, images, videos, and satellite data. It will also view Tranquility Base as a cultural landscape and the potential necessity for preservation at the site.
About the Speaker:
Karen Kincaid Brady is a space history enthusiast, who got the idea for Preservation Moon while attending a panel at a Comic Convention in DC. The topic became her Master’s thesis at the University of Texas at Austin. Following the completion of the Master of Science in Historic Preservation (MSHP) program Brady spent five years at the Neill-Cochran House Museum, developing exciting and new programming to bring the house to life for visitors of all ages.
Prior to joining the Neill-Cochran House, Brady worked as a Project Manager and Historic Preservation Lead at R&K Solutions, Inc. and as the Membership Coordinator at the Federal Bar Association. In addition to her MSHP, she holds a BA and MA in History, and a Certificate in Historic Preservation from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has publiished "The Hangars on the Banks of the St. John’s River: The Landplane Hangar Historic District at NAS Jacksonville" and “Monumental Reinterpretation.”
