Experience some moments of calm and rest whilst learning modern brush pen calligraphy. This modern calligraphy workshop is for beginners, for anyone who would like to revisit calligraphy after a break, or if you are self taught and in need of some direction. Learning modern calligraphy with a brush pen is a brilliant place to start your calligraphy adventure. We explore basic brush pen strokes, build these into letter shapes and then create words and calligraphy quotes. There are plenty of templates for you to trace over as well as experimenting with colour techniques and adding details (including with sparkly pens!) to calligraphy.
There are many templates for you to choose from to create your own greetings cards and gift tags in the session using a light pad, so you have something beautiful to take away at the end of the session. In the workshop you can experiment with all of my brush pens from different manufacturers – great for deciding which pens you prefer without having to pay for something you end up not liking! On the day I have a small shop, so you are able to purchase brush pens and stationery to continue your brush pen calligraphy adventure at home.
There is no requirement to have neat handwriting or previous art experience. With templates to trace over, this is a fun and relaxing workshop.
There is an opportunity to have a break part way through the workshop. There is a cafe within the chapel with a great selection of hot drinks and cakes. A lunch menu is also available if you fancy staying on for some lunch after the workshop.
This workshop takes place at the beautifully restored Graylingwell Chapel. It is a Grade II listed building that was once part of the former Graylingwell Hospital in Chichester. Since the closure of the hospital in 2001 The Chapel remains the only original building still accessible to the public. It is a wonderfully unique, community space to learn calligraphy in.
In the week before the workshop I send you a ‘touching base’ email which contains details about the exact location of the Chapel, how to get there (via Kingsmead Avenue) and where to park. There is parking right next to the Chapel. My emails sometimes end up in the junk box (!) so please either add [email protected] to your contact list, or keep an eye out for the email, and please do check your junk mail box. If you have any questions about this workshop please contact me.
I have been practising calligraphy for many years, starting with learning the traditional scripts (copperplate, italic and foundational hand) at night school and learning from some of the UK’s leading traditional calligraphers. After discovering modern calligraphy, I have enjoyed manipulating the traditional letter shapes into modern styles. This is what gives my modern calligraphy its beauty and elegance.
