About this Event

MN-S staff, “For Peat’s Sake” members and speakers will take participants out to the boundary bog hiking trail in Prince Albert National Park.

The purpose of this event is to reconnect Métis and Indigenous peoples to the land, the focus at this event is Muskegs (peatlands). Although, this event is open to all, no matter what race, ethnicity etc. Facilitators and speakers will speak and discuss the importance of Muskeg’s (peatlands) to carbon sequestration, biodiversity, ecosystem health, and the other benefits it provides. There will also be a strong focus on the traditional/spiritual significance of Muskegs and the types of plants that grow within.

While participants hike, they will have the privilege of learning about the importance of Muskegs (Michif/Cree word for “Peatlands or/and Wetlands”) to combating climate change, biodiversity and overall ecosystem health. There will also be a strong focus on the traditional, spiritual and medicinal significance of the Muskeg.

Key Topics/Discussions:

· Muskegs as a carbon sink, their role in mitigating Climate Change.

· How they contribute to the overall health of the environment and sustain biodiversity.

· The significance of Muskegs to the culture, traditions, and heritage of Métis and Indigenous Peoples.

· Identify medicinal plants found in the Muskeg from a Traditional Knowledge Keeper. Participants should become aware about how plants can nurture our well-being, and how they depend on us for their continued sustainability (harvesting medicine will take place off trail).

Meet MN-S staff and FPS at the Entrance to Boundary Bog Hiking Trail in PANP at 1:00 pm on September 21st.

A MN-S banner/sign with the project name “Li Muskeg Ni Pishkaapahtaynaan” will be set up at the beginning of the trail.

The Boundary Bog will be the longest stop; participants will be given permission to harvest their own medicines if they please (This will take place off trail at an appropriate spot).

This is also where medicine teaching will begin with elder, Margaret King.

Should arrive at the end of the trail around 2:30 pm.

Participants who register will receive a follow up e-mail from Hillary Kyplain.
