This is a walk of awareness to bring attention to the Indian Boarding School which operated for 101 years in Milwaukee, WI. We will learn about the hardships and enduring stories of our relatives and ancestors. Attendees and walkers will learn about the restoration and growth for Native families through American Indian controlled education. By uncovering these truths, we can begin to understand our shared history and heal as a community. Our walk will begin with offers of prayer and support for all of our participants. We will begin at 6:45 am with a Sunrise Ceremony followed by a Water Ceremony. We will walk 14.5 miles, relay-style, on sidewalks, carrying an Eagle Staff and a Every Child Matters flag. No one is expected to walk the entire way! We "relay", meaning that we trade off along the way. Walkers walk, then they rest, then they walk again. Walkers can walk as little or as long as they wish and are able to keep up.
The Walk will end at Indian Community School, where will we have a lunch, speakers, students and elders. We will host a traditional lacrosse game in memory of those lost to educational systems that refused to recognize the sanctity, integrity and self-determination of our families and children.
We will post updates along the way, so please check back often. If you or your organization would like to sponsor or help with this event, please let us know!
Please note: All are welcome but no dogs.
