Explore self-expression by creating an abstract self-portrait collage!
Utilizing different materials and images, you’ll be introduced to the technique of layering. Students will be encouraged to create a narrative around the collage that incorporates the character and mood of the portrait they will be exploring, ie. passions, aspirations, is it serious, playful?
Materials provided:
A primed gesso canvas 14” x 14”, examples of portrait collages as a reference, tools to use: brushes, spatulas, various papers, glues, paints, carbon paper for tracing and paint enhancers.
What to bring:
A print of a photo of yourself or another subject you wish to use as your example. You are encouraged to bring several different sizes of your portrait image, so that you can play with the proportions of the final image. And any magazine images, stencils or papers you would like to use for the background.
This class is for beginners and those with art experience. Ages 18+.
Critique will be offered at the end of the class.
About the instructor:
With an educational background in painting, sculpture and print-making, Karol Jersak has taught art classes at “Create: Mix and Mingle in San Mateo, at corporate art parties, as well as mixed media art classes for children. Her artwork has been exhibited in a number of design centers and galleries.
