CALLING ALL SONG BIRDS & JAZZ LOVERS!To coincide with Easter weekend and International Jazz Day we are delighted to present the Mix Tape Choir weekend singing workshop where we take another deep dive into songs from the Great American Songbook!
Be guided through a repertoire of familiar (or not so familiar) "standards" in a safe container by an experienced Dunedin-based jazz vocalist and creative...
Not a book itself, the "Great American Songbook" is considered to be the canon of the most important and influential American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century that have stood the test of time in their life and legacy. Often referred to as "Standards", the songs published during the Golden Age of this genre include enduring tunes and became the core repertoire of jazz musicians from the 1920s through to the 1950s and 60s.
For this special weekend workshop, we will focus on just a few of the well known standards composed by the likes of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington and Hoagy Carmichael...
The approach is to demonstrate and teach the songs aurally, so no musical or site reading knowledge is required. To add to the experience we have musical accompaniment on guitar by Alex Wolken.

Like the previous workshops and the highly popular weekly choir sessions, this workshop will give us an extended chunk of time - spread over two afternoon - with which to build a repertoire of jazz standards and sing our hearts out with each other. Not only will we create a beautiful sound and have some fun, the stress-busting benefits of singing means you will leave feeling energised, uplifted and joyful, with friendships forged!
