El Centro Espirtual presents:
Misa Cordon por Los Indios

Where: Boise, Idaho, Address given after R.S.V.P. via email
When: Sunday, September 21st, at 2pm

Espiritismo is a spiritual tradition with roots in the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe. Specifics may vary depending on the isle, such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, or Venezuela. In the lineage which I was initiated into, this is Espiritismo Cruzhado de Puerto Rico. One of the central ceremonies of Espiritsmo is La Misa, "The Mass". Looking nothing like the Black Mass of Satanic lodges, nor much like the Masses of the Catholic Church, Misas are spiritual services that give honor, respect, light, and elevation to the ancestors, spirit guides, saints, angels, and other emissarios, "emissaries," of God. Everyone has ancestors, everyone has spirit guides (often refered to as one's Spiritual Frame or Court), at Misa we gather together to hear their messages via the mediums assembled, to receive healing, solutions to problems, lifting and breaking of causes, curses, and crossings, and engage in our own spiritual development.

Misa Cordons are lively events, often with music and dancing, they are celebrations of the spirits.

Who are the Indios?
Indio is the word we use in Espiritismo to describe the court of the indiginous spirits, be they from the Americas, Australia, Russia, Europe, India or Africa, anywhere in the world really. We do not do so as to lump them all together, we understand the practices, beliefs and lifestyles of each are unique unto themselves. We use this word in respect and never a slur. What do they do? That's dependant on each individual spirit. Some may be skilled in traditional healing methods, others may break curses and help in other means of spiritual warfare, including one of the biggest battles, overcoming ourselves (i.e. ego, addiction, habits which are contrary to our health and well-being), or perhaps help in the "hunts" of life, such as career pursuits or finding lost persons or items. Court, others may use the word commission, is indeed a label, one that helps in the identifcation of spirits. Structures as to how many different courts there are and what they are refered to may differ some based on tradition. The traditions of the services are passed down in familial lineage, or godparent to godchild (initiations in traditions like Espiritsmo are more akin to adoption than they are teacher to student relations).

What to wear?
Comfortable, but modest, clothing. There will be dancing, so ensure it is comfortable and not over-heating, nor skin-tight. Misa whites are not required, but respect is. Dyed turkey feather headdresses and the like will be turned away. If you can't think of anything else to wear, Misa whites are always a good go-to. Footwear should be easily removed as services are often done barefoot to aid in the movement of spiritual energies, fluidos espiritual.

What to bring?
Offerings to los Indios: medicinal/spiritual plants (fresh is best, keep it legal), black coffee, cigars, beer, cornmeal, food of the region (think pemican, wojapi, casava bread, fresh fruits/vegetables, not cheeseburgers or hotdogs). These are options, not a checklist.
Food and beverage for the corporeal humans are always welcome as this helps with grounding as well as replenishing energies spent during the service.
If you play a musical instrument, by all means bring it! Music moves the body, the heart, and the soul! We will have bells and cordage that can be used to add some jingles to the steps and movements of the dancers.

What to expect?
We will begin with acknowledgement to the ancestors of the land, the indigenous tribes, including the Shoshone-Bannock, Paiute, and others, followed by the indigenous ancestors of the lineage of Espiritsmo, the Taino and the Arawak. We will set candles and prayers for the MMIP, Murdered and Missing Indigeous Persons, and the spirits of the children who were taken to boarding schools and never returned home. We will have information available for those wishing to donate funds to the MMIP to help the organization in location the missing and help bring justice for the murdered and consoling for the families of those persons. From there, the music and dancing begins.
