Te Motu Kairangi, with the support of the Wellington City Council Arts and Culture Fund and your local community centre, warmly extends an invitation for you to Experience the joy of learning and refreshing your knowledge of flax weaving.No prior experience is necessary; we welcome participants of all skill levels. Basic weaving skills and weaving tikanga will be offered, providing an opportunity to share time, skills, and support with fellow enthusiasts. Connect with Māori arts and crafts as you learn and create together.
Here's what you need to know:
• The session runs from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm. (Clean and packing up from 4:30pm)
• Please bring a bag or bin to take away any unused Harakeke at the end.
• New participants should bring 5-10 rau (blades) of harakeke, a sharp pair of scissors, an old towel, and a bag for any unused rau.
• Returning participants should bring 30-40 rau (blades) of harakeke along with their tools.
• Shared kai (snack type food) if you can but not requirement.
• We do have some tools for borrowing.
A Koha (donation) is appreciated in order to cover the cost of room hire, but it is not a requirement for participation. Come and enjoy the weaving experience while connecting with the rich tradition of Māori arts and crafts.
