Music for 18 Musicians is a contemporary art-music concert that will feature a masterwork by Steve Reich in addition to the premiere of a new work composed specifically for the occasion by Neal Todten. The concert will be hosted at the Happyland Theater located at 3126 Burgundy St. New Orleans, LA on Friday, April 19, 2024 at 8pm.
The concert features a performance of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. Premiering in 1976, the piece is a mature concert work of the American Minimalist tradition, enjoying wild popularity having sold over 100,000 copies of the initial recording on ECM records. The unique ensemble of eighteen musicians employs four pianists, six mallet percussionists, four vocalists, two clarinetists, a violinist, and a cellist. The work is a long-form piece harkening to music of Balinese Gamelan and African drumming through the gaze of a modern contemporary master of the hypnotic school of Minimalism.
A new work, titled In the Describable It, will receive its premiere for the concert as well. This piece was composed by the concert’s presenter/producer, Neal Todten, specifically for the occasion. Past productions have received high praise for the new works of Mr. Todten, and this piece aims to satisfy enthusiastic audiences.
The presentation is produced by Neal Todten as a continuing concert series started in 2022 at the Happyland Theater in New Orleans, LA. The presentations are part of an on-going effort to produce concerts that explore works from the avant-garde musical tradition, share the experience of live performance with audiences, as well as premiere new works by a New Orleans based composer. Mr. Todten has been producing concerts in New Orleans since 2018.
Music for 18 Musicians is a one-time performance to be presented at the Happyland Theater on Friday, April 19, 2024. The concert will begin at 8pm with the doors opening at 7:30pm.
