About this Event
You are invited to join True Peace sanga (community) in meditation and mindfulness practice on Thursday evenings. This will be a hybrid experience with participants joining both virtually and in-person. Sessions typically include sitting meditation, relaxation practice, moving meditation, singing, and/or dharma sharing (individuals sharing about the joys and challenges of their mindfulness practice).
True Peace sanga practices meditation and mindfulness according to the Plum Village tradition of Buddhism founded by the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. You can find out more about Plum Village and Thich Nhat Hanh at https://plumvillage.org/about/plum-village. Participants of all backgrounds, orientations, religions, ages and identities are welcome. Children and youth 16 years of age or younger, must be accompanied by an adult.
What To Expect
No experience is necessary. Sessions are led by experienced meditation practitioners. A session typically include guided meditation (sitting or lying down for about 20 minutes), deep relaxation practice, moving meditation, singing, readings, and/or dharma sharing (individual sharing about the joys and challenges of practice). Snacks will be available for those who want to nibble and chat after meditation practice. Participants of all backgrounds, orientations, religions, ages, and identities are welcome. Children and youth 16 years of age or younger, must be accompanied by an adult.
Cost
There is no fee to attend. As a group, ongoing members can decide to contribute to snacks and group supplies such as dedicated meditation cushions and a microphone. Donations are welcome.
Arrival Time
The practice room will be available from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. We ask that you arrive before 5:25pm since it will not be possible to buzz you in to enter the building between that time and 7:05pm. Facilitated activities will be led until 7:00pm.
What to Bring and Wear
You can bring a blanket/pad/towel/cushion to sit or lie on. (There might be an opportunity for us to make our own meditation cushions and sitting pads in the future.) There will be chairs available for those who need them. It is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. Shirts covering midriff and chest are required. Shoes are removed at the door.
Booking an Attendance Ticket
We suggest that you confirm your attendance by booking an Eventbrite ticket before arriving. This helps to ensure that there is enough space for everyone. It also ensures that you can be notified in the event of a last minute cancellation. If you come without booking a ticket, you can join us if there is enough space that night..
Parking and Transit
The visitor’s parking lot is under construction until spring 2024. You can park at the adjacent plaza on the south-east corner of Garden and Rossland. The venue is on main bus routes. Check the online Durham Region Transit Schedule for more information: Planning your travel - Durham Region Transit.
Covid and Health Precautions
If you are experiencing symptoms of a communicable disease, such as Covid, we ask that you do not attend in-person practice that evening. Contact Sharon (see below) to find out if you can join our practice virtually. During times of disease outbreak, in-person practice sessions may be cancelled. If you have booked a ticket through Eventbrite, we will attempt to contact you to let you know of a cancellation.
