The East Anglian Branch of the Arboricultural Association is holding an autumn walk and talk around the Millenium Oaks collection at Wivenhoe Park, University of Essex, Colchester. There are at least 30 different species or cultivars to see. The walk will follow a predetermined route so that we can see as many of the different species we can in the available time. Wivenhoe Park forms part of the University campus in Colchester. It is a Registered Grade II Park and Garden extending to around 81 ha. It was previously a deer park that was improved in 1776/80 by Richard Woods to form a landscaped park of 34ha round a country house, with the remains of a garden designed by William Andrews Nesfield between 1847-8.
John Constable painted the park in 1816. His painting, Wivenhoe Park, is now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC.
Wivenhoe Park has received a Green Flag Award six times and has received a Gold Award as a Hedgehog Friendly Campus. The parkland has been voted one of the top ten green spaces in the UK, in the People's Choice Award on four consecutive occasions and is the only university campus to have achieved this award.
We look forward to seeing you there for an enjoyable walk and talk in great company and surroundings!
