CCBC Catonsville Academic Theatre presents Milan 1880 by James Caverly
In partnership with The A. Eugene & Bernice Hoeper ASL and Interpreting Program
Milan 1880 is a groundbreaking new production written by James Caverly (Only Murders in the Building) that blends Deaf and hearing performers with dialogue in both ASL and English. Commissioned by CCBC as part of its biennial initiative to present blended productions, this play explores a pivotal moment in Deaf history: the 1880 Second International Congress on the Education of the Deaf in Milan, Italy, which declared aural education superior to sign language, leading to a decades-long ban on sign language education. The cast includes Deaf performers, hearing bilingual performers, and hearing English-speaking students, with Deaf actors portraying the American contingent, enabling the Deaf community to bring this vital history to life.
