Tonight, we're proud and excited to continue our 2022 Summer Speaker series at the Million Dollar Theater with a double feature of the 1935 Universal horror classic The Bride of Frankenstein on 35mm and the brand spanking new documentary MIKE MIGNOLA DRAWING MONSTERS followed by a Q&A with comic book creator/artist Mr. Mignola (Hellboy) and documentarians Jim Demonakos and Kevin Konrad Hanna in person.

First up, we screen The Bride of Frankenstein -- often considered one of the, if not THE, high watermark of Universal's original 1930's monster cycle. Directed by James Whale, The Bride of Frankenstein picks up just moments after the end of the original Frankenstein with the seemingly dead monster (Karloff!) rising from the fire of the destroyed windmill.

Only this time, Frankenstein's Monster feels a loneliness and sadness that makes him yearn to have a mate. When Henry Frankenstein reunites with his former mentor, Dr. Praeotorious, the two begin to hatch a plan to create such a mate though Dr. Frankenstein specifically knows that he may be meddling with forces beyond his control.

The Bride of Frankenstein, more than any other of its peers (save maybe The Invisible Man, also directed by Whale!) combined a viciously funny dark comedy with real pathos and pain to create a deeply felt and rich horror movie.

Mr. Mignola has guest programmed it as an example of a movie that had a deep and profound influence on his life and art.

We follow this up with the new documentary MIKE MIGNOLA DRAWING MONSTERS. When Mike Mignola created Hellboy, he unleashed a visionary comic book character and launched an entire universe populated by unique heroes and creatures, misfits and monsters. Featuring in-depth interviews with Mignola alongside appearances from the likes of Patton Oswalt, Guillermo del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Rebecca Sugar and Victor LaValle, Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is a film for fans of the Hellboy universe and the Hellboy movies, but more than this, it’s a film for anyone interested in creativity and the imagination.

And finally, Mr. Mignola himself joins us along with the doc filmmakers to talk about his life, his art, comic books, cinema, and to answer any questions you might have!

So join us for an amazing night of cinema and conversation.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
