Distant LightsDistant Lights is the latest jazz release from saxophonist Miguel Crozzoli, guitarist Gon Muruaga, and drummer Axel Filip, three experienced jazz and contemporary performer-composers working in the free improvisation and contemporary scene in Europe and South America.
The music is mainly driven by melodic interaction, experimenting with a bassless trio formation. For each song, the trio composed a draft of melodic material, suggesting multiple options for melodic development, harmonies, and rhythmic patterns. Then the music was born through the musicians' interaction with this material, keeping the conversation and development of the music in a state of surprise.
The music is influenced by Dewey Redman, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, and Tony Malaby, with an unexpected reminiscence of Argentinian folk music. The trio creates intimate and nostalgic songs, sometimes sharpened by the drums, only to fall back into a soft and enchanting sound that the listener can follow with and within.
