An astronomy event planned for Thursday, Feb. 19, will offer local residents a chance to view planets, nebulae, star clusters and other wonders of the night sky.The midwinter star party, sponsored by the Klamath County Museum, will be held in the parking lot of Foothills Christian Fellowship, 6200 Church Hill Drive, near the north end of Patterson Street.
The event begins promptly at 6 p.m., and is free and open to anyone interested.
The planet Mercury, closest to the sun, will be visible, along with Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, and Neptune. Mercury and Venus will only be seen for a short time after sunset.
Earthshine, which refers to sunlight reflected off of Earth to the moon's dark side, will also be visible.
Other objects always popular in the wintertime night sky include the Pleiades, Orion, and Sirius.
Telescopes will be provided by local amateur astronomers from the Klamath Basin.
Participants should dress for cold nighttime air, and bring binoculars and lawn chairs.
Anyone who would like to request help with setting up their personal telescope is welcome to come at 5 p.m. to receive assistance.
