Adults £8 / Under 18 £2 I Swear, is a compassionate, clear-eyed portrait of the life of Tourette's activist John Davidson. It's 1983 in Galashiels, Scotland, John is a happy, popular boy, the star goalkeeper at his school and crazy about chips. When involuntary tics start to creep into his voice and mannerisms, his life changes dramatically. Dismissed by his parents and ostracised and ridiculed by his friends, John's life begins to spiral until he meets some unique characters who set him on a on a journey that will change his life forever.
Director Kirk Jones (Waking Ned) coaxes an astonishing performance out of Robert Aramayo as the adult John, whilst Scott Ellis Watson is superb as the schoolboy. Maxine Peake and Peter Mullan are predictably excellent as the mental health nurse who takes him in and the community centre worker who gives John a chance respectively.
By turns hilarious, tragic, absorbing and compassionate, this film sidesteps cliche and embraces inspiration.
This is a film about Tourettes Syndrome and as the title suggests, there is a lot of swearing.
