About this Event

IN PERSON

In celebration of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture's 100th anniversary, join us for Mic’d at MIRS, an intimate series of live “mini concerts" and DJ sets within the library’s research divisions.

In partnership with The Lot Radio, Mic'd at MIRS will activate the Center's collections of recorded sound, poetry and music with special guest curators. Performances will take place in the Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division (MIRS, pronounced “meers”), which collects and preserves audio and moving image materials related to the experiences of people of African descent. The series will employ the archives to inspire artists and musicians as they breathe new life into the research materials through live performances.

Mic’d at MIRS is organized in partnership with The Lot Radio.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Space is limited.

PARTICIPANTS

LOVIE Connecting the mind, to the body, to the soul, Lovie's sets inspire the warmest, most community-minded dance floors you'll find in New York. For four years Lovie's Lot radio residency—now being offered as one of the station's few weekly shows—has thumbed through the intimate corners of her music collection. Her diligence to the craft, musical curiosity, and deep focus on the listening experience has earned her a spot on Mixmag's Top 25 Breakthrough DJs of 2024, as well as a coveted residency at Brooklyn club public records. She saunters through slow-groove disco, dusty '70s funk, and sumptuous house music, all spun with the patience and musicality associated with the East Coast house tradition. Lovie's studied archival work paired with deep emotional wisdom makes for honey-sweet dance floor memories you'll want to replay again and again.

RUSSELL E. L. BUTLER is a Bermudian artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Russell's work investigates dub processes as a means of establishing rituals around grief and remembrance. Russell's recent work has taken the form of the Deep Exposure newsletter and Lot Radio show in which she investigates cultural practices that involve deep and intentional listening. Their sound work has extended to the album Call Me G on T4T Luv NRG, subsequent self-releases (G) and In Place of Words I Can't Recalls, and a collaboration with renowned Dub Techno artist, Paul St. Hilaire.
