Bacteria. Protozoa. Nematodes. Fungi. These are the names of the microscopic community members working hard to transform dirt into soil and bring mauri to our māra kai. They are your friends - your unpaid kaimahi - but how well do you really know them?
In this short online course you’ll build maramatanga by learning how to identify, understand and work hand-in-hand with these microbes. By zooming in on the life beneath your feet, you'll gain huge insight into how your soil lives, breathes, stores carbon, holds moisture, repairs itself, feeds itself and more!

In the four modules of this course you will:
1. Get an introduction to the soil food web.
2. Build a bio-complete compost pile.
3. Discover which microbes are in your compost or soil (BYO sample and we'll have a look under the microscope!).
4. Gain greater understanding about your growing system, and how your management practices interact with microbial life.
You'll also pick up plenty of practical tips along the way, including how to boost the numbers of fungi in your compost, how to track temperature, what inputs certain microbes love, and how to adapt your existing system at home, school or māra.
