Sat & Sun, Jan 18 & 19 at The Shedd in Eugene: Michael Anderson and microphilharmonic present five pieces from the second quarter of the 20th century: Samuel Barber’s 1953 Summer Music; Igor Stravinsky’s Concerto in E-flat Dumbarton Oaks, which had been commissioned by American art collectors and philanthropists Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss for their 30th wedding anniversay and premiered with Nadia Boulanger conducting at their estate, Dumbarton Oaks, on May 8 1938 while Stravinsky was in a Parisian hospital being treated for tuberculosis. And three works for voice and ensemble featuring soprano Siri Vik: Aaron Copland’s 1923 setting of Elizabethan poet Richard Barnsworth’s “As It Fell Upon A Day” (an early student assignment from Boulanger during the period he was studying with her in Paris), Barber’s flat out magnificent 1947 setting of novelist-poet James Agee’s 1938 prose poem Knoxville: Summer of 1915, and Susannah’s stunning aria “The Trees On The Mountain” from Carlisle Floyd’s 1955 opera Susannah.
