Greetings! The Michigan Medicine ECMO Program is pleased to announce an Adult ECMO Specialist Training Course, June 26 - June 28, 2023.
About this Event

This course is intended for the whole ECMO care team; Physicians, Perfusionists, NP's, Nurses, Respiratory therapists, and PA's. The final agenda to follow for the course, will be emailed to your provided email in the days leading up to the course but we have provided a preliminary agenda here for your convenience. This course is designed as an ECMO Specialist Training Course, incorporating every role for the treatment team including Physicians, Perfusionists, RN’s, Respiratory Therapists, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants, and is taught through both lectures and wet lab exercises. The course will cover the following topics:

  • Physiology of ECLS
  • Vascular access and cannulation techniques
  • Management of Anticoagulation
  • Bedside Management of VA ECLS
  • ECLS for Adult Cardiac Failure
  • Bedside Management of VV ECLS
  • ECLS for Adult Respiratory Failure
  • Wet Lab Exercises (VV ECLS scenarios and VA ECLS scenarios)
  • Pharmacology
  • Coordinate appropriate ECMO equipment for individual institutional needs
  • Discern appropriate populations for ECMO
  • Discern appropriate cannulation strategies for ECMO
  • Coordinate a multidisciplinary care plan for ECMO patients
  • Perform daily maintenance ECMO duties
  • Coordinate advanced modalities such as transport and ambulation
  • Devise anticoagulation strategies

As a result of participating in this course, individuals will know and be able to implement into practice ECMO Techniques for initiating, managing, troubleshooting and discontinuing ECMO support.


The course fees are as follows:

The Adult course on June 26th through June 28th, 2023 - has a fee of $2,000

Michigan Medicine - Internal Attendees - has a fee of $150

All course fees include all course materials. Course size is limited in order to enhance learning and participation. Reservations will be accepted with a completed, signed registration entry and payment on a first-come, first-serve basis until the course is full.
