A Program of Acoustic Music featuring Original, Celtic, and American Selections.Michael Mandrell’s finger-style guitar work and moving ballads have earned him a reputation as a talented composer of original work, a recording artist, a touring musician, and a go-to session performer from Taos to Portland and across the American west. Michael’s playing ranges from meditative to energetic and has been associated with both Celtic and New Age music. He is joined in this concert by the Fairy Jazz Project, the performing heart of Fairy Jazz Productions, a group of artists in Taos who have produced five shows over the last year, bringing in local and traveling musicians for collaborative performances. Having first played with members of the group in the Taos Irish Session, Michael starred in one of their shows in September and connected with the FJP through their mutual interest in Celtic music. They have been playing and performing together ever since. The FJP includes Julie Hawley on harp and bass, Jimmie Killingsworth on mandolin, Irish bouzouki, and banjo, and Stephen Welter on string bass and guitar. They draw on Irish, Scottish, and Appalachian traditions in their original work and in vocal and instrumental covers with some surprising forays into jazz, rock, and blues. The show promises some instrumental flash, some sweet singing, and an attitude of open-hearted joy to bring in the New Year.
