Michael Lewin is one of America’s premier concert pianists. He is professor and head of the Piano Department and artistic director of the acclaimed Piano Masters Series.
A Steinway Artist, Lewin’s active international career has taken him to more than 30 countries for recitals, major music festivals, PBS television broadcasts, and orchestral performances of a repertoire of 40 concertos with numerous symphony orchestras. His orchestral engagements include the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Netherlands Philharmonic, Bucharest Philharmonic, China National Orchestra, Cairo Symphony, State Symphony of Athens, the symphonies of Phoenix, Indianapolis, Puerto Rico, Miami, Colorado, and North Carolina, and 13 concerts with the Boston Pops.
Lewin has won a Grammy Award, the American Pianists Fellowship, the William Kapell International Competition, and third prize in the Liszt Utrecht Competition. His 14 recordings on Naxos, Centaur, and Sono Luminus include music by Scarlatti, Liszt, Griffes, Gottschalk, Bolcom, Debussy, Russian piano music, and many more. He is a sought-after chamber musician and has premiered many new works.
Critics have lauded his “immense technique and ability” (New York Times) and “dazzling music-making” (Gramophone, England), calling him “a poet and a virtuoso” (De Telegraaf, Amsterdam) and praising his “profound understanding and deeply heartfelt voice” (Pravda, Moscow), “passion and precision” (Washington Post), and “playing of majestic power and searing emotion” (London Times).
Lewin earned a BM and MM from the Juilliard School, with additional studies with Leon Fleisher and in France with Yvonne Lefébure. A highly sought-after teacher, he has taught numerous prize-winning and successful pianists, presents master classes and performs in festivals worldwide, and serves as a frequent international competition judge.
