About this Event
California has always been a beacon of opportunity and diversity, drawing dreamers even long before its statehood in 1850. The reality is more nuanced, however.
Golden State paints California as a pivotal force in American history, a place where progressive politics, technological innovation, and environmental activism coexist within a diverse social landscape—and emphasizes that this has not always been so. From the lawlessness of the Gold Rush to its current status as a cultural and tech powerhouse, California embodies the messiness of change across the many defining issues of our time, including immigration, the environment, racial discrimination, and affordable housing.
California to this day is not only a geographical location, but a state of mind; Golden State explores its history from both vantage points.
