Join AIA Chesapeake Bay for a presentation and tour of the Michael E Busch Library in Annapolis, MD, winner of the 2023 AIA Chesapeake Bay Design Awards: Non-Residential New Construction. Opened in 2020 for Anne Arundel County Public Library system, the $24 million, 32,500 square foot building was named for the late House Speaker, Michael E Busch, an Annapolis resident, and long-time advocate for state library funding.

The library houses 85,000 books and a variety of education and resource materials available to the public. There is a vending café, makerspace, tech zone, dedicated teen and children’s areas, and several gathering spaces. The design team used acoustic modeling to analyze the public and private realms of the library environment, allowing them to define the acoustic environment throughout the space.

In early planning, the design team aimed for a LEED Silver status, but ultimately achieved a LEED Gold certification with a creative implementation of geothermal VRF heating and cooling, 222 individually programmed electrochromic windows and responsibly sourced materials. It was the first Anne Arundel County building to achieve this elite LEED status.

Architect Jeremy Kline, AIA LEED AP BD+C, with Annapolis firm WGM Architecture + Interiors and Mike Purtell, PE, LEED AP, with Gipe Associates, will give a presentation on the community-oriented design philosophy of the building, the enhanced acoustic performance of public spaces, and the use of innovative HVAC and glazing technologies to attain LEED accreditation.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the importance of designing space to accommodate a diverse population using a variety of resources in one shared facility; witness how such a facility can create a sense of place and belonging for community members.

2. Explore the acoustic modeling and available technologies to analyze and react to building sound during the design phase.

3. Discuss the challenges and benefits of geothermal systems and how they can be used to achieve individual zone control without limiting site design and development.

4. Learn how electrochromic glass can be successfully implemented into a project to control daylighting, glare and heat gain, and recognize the impacts of individualized glass control on other building systems.

HSW Justification:

Health: As a building designed to comply with LEED guidelines, this program will discuss key strategies implemented to design and construct the building in an environmentally responsible way. These strategies ultimately lead to a healthier building and occupants.

Safety: As a public space welcoming a diverse user group, the design of the library itself was intended to create a safe, hospitable environment for all. The use of individually controlled glazing and carefully-planned acoustics enables spaces to promote the safety and privacy of those users.

Welfare: The presentation and tour will demonstrate to attendees how a library building can improve the human experience through the built environment. The building is a meeting ground for people of all ages, races, backgrounds, and needs, and originated from a thoughtful design collaboration with those users in mind.
