Let’s get behind Michael Bell’s recovery! On Tuesday, July 9th 2024, Michael Bell , aged 51, suffered a stroke. He was transported to the John Hunter quickly. Clot buster was administered in time, unfortunately for Michael, it didn’t work.
Wednesday, July 10th 2024, Michael suffered a brain bleed. He was just a centimetre from death, the bleed didn’t hit his brain stem.
Thursday, July 11th 2024, Michael had his first seizure due to brain swelling.
Neurologists advised his Mum and children, he may die. He could lose the ability to breathe on his own. If he was to turn a corner and pull through, he’d likely be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life.
He proved them wrong! He got through his time at John Hunter Hospital then worked hard at rehab. But life will never be the same for him.
Michael was a very social person . Spent most of his days off driving his children to work, sports, the beach, the park or kicking a footy or attending the footy games of 3 of his kids.
He would make track marks at his kids footy games, walking the sideline to cheer them and their team on.
He worked full time driving heavy machinery at HVO, in the Hunter Valley.
Fortunately, after 2 weeks in the acute stroke ward and 10 weeks in rehab, Michael has made it home after spending Father’s Day and birthdays in rehab.
Unfortunately, Michael has been left with an acquired brain injury (ABI) and vision impairment.
He will never drive again or work at the job he was passionate about.
Unfortunately, Michael was not covered for total personal disability or income protection through his super, due to being a diabetic.
So after many weeks of thinking, I thought why not do a fundraiser to help ease a little bit of stress.
Michael has 4 children who he adores and loves to be around.
He has always been an independent man who would jump in his car to take the kids to footy training, work, dance or take his mum grocery shopping.
Michael has been a Maitland boy for his whole life. He’d be the first person to offer the shirt off his back, to anyone in need.
By holding the Michael Bell Recovery Fundraiser it will take a little bit of pressure of Michael while he navigates through this massive change in his life. He’s come so far, but still has a way to go.
