Half your park is after dark! To celebrate Miami/International Dark Sky Week, we are hosting several weekend programs in Flamingo, Shark Valley, Royal Palm, and Gulf Coast, detailed below. Come discover the night! -- "Flamingo: Night Wonders" on April 10th, 2021, from 8:30pm - 9:30pm.
Join a park ranger and find out some of the cool things about the nocturnal environment at Flamingo along with a nice helping of night-sky viewing! This 60-minute program will be held on Saturday, April 10th beginning at 8:30 PM, and is very limited in availability for registered campground guests. To sign up for your group, visit the Flamingo Visitor Center on April 10th. Thank you in advance for noting that our staff must maintain social distancing.
-- "Shark Valley: The Park After Dark Open House" on April 10th, 2021, from 7pm - 10pm.
Join us at the Shark Valley Visitor Center, viewing platform, Bobcat Boardwalk, and along the paved tram path. There will be 5 stations to cycle through, to keep visitors engaged and dispersed. Rangers will partner with the International Dark-Sky Association and astronomy group to provide a telescope. The Bobcat Boardwalk will be briefly illuminated at the east and west end, allowing visitors to self-explore. We remind visitors to bring red-tinted lights to reduce night blindness. No reservations are required.
-- "Royal Palm: Starlight Walk on the Anhinga Trail" on April 10th, 2021, at 8:30pm.
Experience the Anhinga Trail by starlight! The night is just as busy as day, listen for pig frogs, look for fireflies and gator eyes! Meet at the Royal Palm benches, near the Visitor Center. Flashlights are optional. The trail, 0.7 miles, is accessible. The program will be about 45 minutes. No reservations are required.
NOTE: The City of Homestead is offering a FREE Trolley ride to Everglades National Park for the Royal Palm program. The Homestead Dark Sky Trolley will depart from Homestead Station (4 S. Krome Ave., Homestead, FL 33030) in Downtown Homestead on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at 7:30 pm to arrive at Everglades National Park's Royal Palm Visitor Center/Anhinga Trail by 8:00 pm. The Trolley will depart Everglades National Park at 10:00 pm for arrival back in Downtown Homestead at 10:30 pm.
