About Mark:

Mark Waldrop was born in San Antonio in 1950 and grew up there, often spending summers with an aunt & uncle in Abilene. His first instrument was a plastic ukulele that was joyously strummed as a toddler and his first real instrument was a snare drum, followed by a $25.00 Airline acoustic guitar, then a full set of drums.

"Initially, I played drums in various unmemorable garage bands until I switched to guitar and vocals in such bands as The Brass Rail, The Other Half, and Milkwood. We played at Teen Canteen, Lake McQueeney, and the usual haunts. Shortly out of high school in 1969 I moved to New York City where my eyes were opened in a big way. I had already known of the great folk performers such as Odetta, Phil Ochs, Dylan and others. The British folk musicians like Donovan and Pentangle also had a huge influence. Once I got to the city and saw many of them up close I was hooked. At the same time I was working as an usher at The Fillmore East where I saw most of the great rock acts of the day.

Gigged around The Village for a spell. My musical partner Bob Rountree and myself took a hiatus to Phoenix for about 6 months before things imploded and I moved back to NYC and Bob moved to Nashville. I pretty much stopped performing and began taking lessons from the legendary Roy Smeck and later from Carl Thompson, knowntoday for building extremely high end electric bass guitars.

Spent a few years around the Bay Area where I would occasionally play a restaurant gig. Joined a Bakersfield style country band out of Oakland.

Circumstances brought me back to Texas, landing in Dallas where I stayed for about 13 years, occasionally playing at Poor David's Pub and other spots. Later spent a few unproductive years in Austin.

Moving back to San Antonio in 1990 brought me back to music, although I knew that full time performing and that whole hustle was not for me. So I went to Bryan Galloup's guitar building and repair school in Michigan, came back and began practicing what I'd learned. All the while gigging with my trio Mark's Brothers, playing a lot of vintage style stuff like swing, western swing, rockabilly, old school country, old pop tunes, Texas songwriters, and some originals.

That brings us up to now. I've had my guitar shop Guitar Tex for nearly 25 years and Mark's Brothers has played together for over 30 years."

About Azul:

Azul Barrientos is a musician dedicated to observing and conserving the cultural influences and interconnections between Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Mexico. Born in Mexico City, Azul was introduced to Latin America’s traditional and folkloric songs at an early age. This legacy drives her passion for reviving lost cultural traditions and sharing each song’s unique history. Azul moved to San Antonio as a young woman, developing a reputation as a bridge-builder between Mexicana and Chicana cultures. She rejoices in her Latina roots, giving new life to the rhythms and stories of previous generations.
