Who are Dale and Stephen?
Stephen and Dale Ott are a husband-and-wife team with over 30 years of experience in the wine and spirits industries between them. Dale is a Certified Sommelier and former brand manager for a national American Single Malt Whiskey distillery based in Arizona. Stephen is a Certified Sommelier, Certified Wine and Spirits Educator, and a former distiller. Running their own business together was always the end goal, and focusing on the wine aspect of the industry was an obvious choice as their passion lies in the drink’s encapsulation of agriculture, history, culture, and a language to which Dale and Stephen have intricate ties. They also have deep roots in Tucson and the Southwest, heavily defined by their historical connections with Iberian and Latin culture. They are also fluent and well-studied in the Portuguese and Spanish languages, all of which inspired them for their particular focus on their import company.
What is Nossa?
Nossa translates to “ours.” Nossa represents that wine belongs to everyone: it is community-oriented, unrestrictive, and inclusive. It is grown and made in every corner of the world, and when you experience a bottle of wine, it should be transportive and bring everyone together. With Nossa’s portfolio in particular, it is important to convey that Dale and Stephen have fostered close relationships with their growers and producers so that they are well-equipped to tell their stories to bring these experiences closer to those drinking their wine. Their portfolio is unique because their focus is on wine regions easily marginalized in the global market. Nossa’s wines give their consumers a sense of sitting at a communal table with friends in the vineyards of Portugal or Mexico, slowing down, sipping casually, all while listening to the stories of the producers and the earth they tend. To Nossa, this is true luxury. Nossa is the conduit between producer and drinker by asking, is this wine enjoyable? Is it made with integrity? Is there a direct vein from the producer and grower to the wine in the bottle? When we taste this outside of where it’s made, will it take us back there? Can we chase the producer’s mission to the bottle on the table? Nossa chases the mission: from origin to vineyard, grape to bottle.
Why these regions as a whole?
Nossa Imports focuses on Iberian and Latin wines. Dale and Stephen share close ties to these regions. Their book showcases Portuguese and Mexican wines and hopes to expand into Spain and South America. Nossa traces this history–how wine grapes and viticulture from Iberia and the Americas have come together to create a new understanding of these regions. Nossa focuses on regions that have lived on the margins of a global wine conversation. Nossa brings them to the forefront and closes the gaps in wine’s history through transparent and palpable storytelling.
Why Mexico?
Mexico is the New World’s oldest wine-growing region yet an underrepresented category in the US market. Mexico’s wine story and Stephen and Dale’s personal ties to the region are why Mexican wines are prominent in Nossa’s portfolio. Here is the story of how New World winemaking began, its journey through the years, to now, where the industry and its innovation and adaptation flourish. Mexico is a region that is reminiscent of well-received California wine regions and its unique heritage is not to be ignored. With Nossa’s expert storytelling, there’s no one better to translate the story and mission of Mexican wine.
Nossa Imports brings in transportive wines from Portugal and Mexico to inspire conversation and community for the everyday.
