About this Event

Meta Morphosis is a collaboration between kantele musician Eva Alkula and harpist Pippa Reid-Foster, which dives into the soundscape created by the kantele and the Scottish harp. Based on minimalist music, compositions and improvisation, the atmospheric concert explores the transformation as climate change and COVID-19 pandemic rumble the world. The concert will feature music by Philip Glass, Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres, Pippa Reid-Foster, among others, as well as the premiere of a new work composed for the duo by Timo Alakotila.

Kantele musician Eva Alkula specializes in contemporary music and Japanese-influenced music. Eva performs regularly as a soloist and in various chamber music ensembles in Finland and abroad. Her collaborations with contemporary composers, musicians, and visual artists have generated many new works for the kantele, concert projects, and installations. She has performed new kantele music in numerous music festivals, such as Our Festival, Tampere Biennale, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, Musica Nova, Time of Music, Nordic Music Days (Norrköping, Copenhagen, Reykjavik), MATA -festival (New York), Myrkir musik dagar (Reykjavik) and Bergen International Festival.

Eva has performed as a soloist with Lapland Chamber Orchestra, Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra, and Orchestra Polledro (Turin). She has also joined several theater and opera productions in Tampere Theater, Finnish National Theater, Finnish National Opera, Savonlinna Opera Festival, Utrecht Akademietheater, and Von Krahl Theater (Tallinn).

Pippa Reid-Foster, a graduate of 2014 from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, is not only an accomplished performer and composer but is also passionate about passing on her skills to a new generation of musicians and composers. Pippa is known for her innovative contemporary clàrsach music, showcasing the varied tonal palettes of the clàrsach. Since releasing her first solo album Driftwood Harp in 2016, Pippa’s focus has moved towards a more minimal compositional style incorporating electronic looping and effects whilst still retaining strong references to her Scottish roots. She has performed at many festivals including the Edinburgh International Harp Festival and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections. Her ability to adapt comfortably to a wide range of musical disciplines has resulted in stage performance and studio work with a number of Scottish contemporary rock bands.
