đ"Where Blues Meets Theater: Exit Above Live" đđ¶As part of the Week of Belgian Music, we proudly present the album release of Exit Above, performed live by Meskerem Mees and Carlos Garbin.
Meskerem, whose name means ânew beginningâ (a reference to September 1st, the Ethiopian New Year), is a multi-award-winning artist. After honing her creative talents in Denmark at Vestjyllands HĂžjskole, she launched a remarkable music career, winning Humoâs Rock Rally 2020, the Montreux Jazz Talent Awards and the Music Moves Europe Award.
Her debut album, Julius (2021), and EP, Caesar (2022), showcased her profound storytelling and melodic brilliance, with tracks like Joe, Astronaut, and Best Friend. Meskerem is also celebrated for her work in Exit Above, a production by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, which explores themes of survival, resilience, and climate reflection, inspired by Walkinâ Blues and The Tempest.
Joining her on stage is the talented Carlos Garbin, a master of the Mississippi Delta blues and a beloved performer at Missy Sippy. His authentic style adds depth and soul to the music of Exit Above.
This project also features compositions by the late Jean-Marie Aerts, renowned for his groundbreaking work with T.C. Matic. His electrified tracks push the boundaries of blues into modernity, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply.
About the Album:
The music on this album was originally composed for the dance piece EXIT ABOVE by ROSAS/Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Taking the song Walkinâ Blues (written in 1930 by Son House, immortalised by Robert Johnson) as their point of departure, Meskerem Mees and Carlos Garbin created an intimate blues-suite paying tribute to the genre as a medium for storytelling.
The stories they tell echo the tradition of âdisaster songs,â inspired by historical catastrophes like The Great Mississippi Flood. These songs constitute a collective archive of resilience, illustrating how music aids in overcoming disasterâphysically, spiritually, and mentally.
A second source of inspiration is Shakespeareâs The Tempest, where Prosperoâs final act of renouncing his magic serves as a metaphor for choosing what to take, change, or discard in the face of climate disaster.
As a counterpoint to their acoustic storytelling, the late Jean-Marie Aerts added rousing and fiery tracks, modernising the blues with beats and technology. Jean-Marie passed away in April 2024. May his storm keep raging in the spinning turmoil of his tracks. đȘïž
