"Sketches in Color"Merz Trio's adventurous programming brings together scintillating harmonies of Alma Mahler and Alban Berg, dreamlike elegy of Sergei Rachmaninoff, and bold, inspired strokes of a young, sixteen-year-old Dmitri Shostakovich. Each composer is featured in works that showcase some of their most "coloristic" writing. The Brahms Trio that ends the program is no exception. Though Brahms is rarely thought of as a tone painter, we hear his C Major Trio afresh in this context and understand him as a truly virtuosic texturist, composing for this instrumentation with incredible subtlety and imagination.
