Merope interweaves the kanklės – a traditional Lithuanian stringed instrument – with the voice, guitar, synths and electronics to create a modern sound. The three musicians combine traditional music, ambient and indie in unique ways, resulting in restrained, atmospheric music and a soundscape that is both local and universal. Merope is no stranger to Bozar. In collaboration with the Vilnius chamber music choir Jauna Muzika, the trio has already offered us an unforgettable evening. Now they have invited the highly sought multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily to join them. “Merope stretches where traditionalists narrow.” Along with the mighty Ismaily, Merope pushes back the limits of the kanklės further than ever.

Merope tisse le kanklės, un instrument à cordes traditionnel lituanien, avec des voix, de la guitare, des synthés et de l'électronique pour créer un son moderne. Le trio parvient comme aucun autre à associer la musique traditionnelle, l'ambient et l'indie, pour offrir une musique discrète et atmosphérique, un paysage sonore à la fois local et universel. L’histoire entre Merope et Bozar n’en est pas à ses balbutiements. Avec le chœur de chambre Jauna Muzika de Vilnius, le trio avait déjà signé une soirée inoubliable. Cette fois, il s’allie au multi-instrumentiste Shahzad Ismaily. « Merope s'étend là où les traditionalistes se rétrécissent ». Avec le magistral Ismaily, Merope repousse plus loin que jamais les limites du kanklės.

Merope verweeft de kanklės – een traditioneel Litouws snaarinstrument – samen met zang, gitaar, synths en electronica tot een modern geluid. Op onvergelijkbare wijze vermengt het drietal elementen van traditionele muziek, ambient en indie met als resultaat een ingetogen, atmosferische muziek, een soundscape die zowel lokaal als universeel is. Merope is geen onbekende voor Bozar. Samen met het Vilnius Kamermuziekkoor Jauna Muzika zorgde het trio al voor een onvergetelijke avond. Nu nodigen ze de veelgevraagde multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily uit. “Merope strekt zich uit daar waar traditionalisten zich vernauwen.” Samen met de meesterlijke Ismaily rekt Merope de grenzen van de kanklės verder open dan ooit.
