Ephia Gburek shares her interrogations into the shifting of consciousness, presence and listening, relations between body and object, body and material, body and landscape. She travels with the group towards an astonishing opening of the perception and the imagination, towards a choreography through embodied states of presence.
The workshop proposes three paths of physical exploration:
- transforming our material presence (a body danced by sensorial images)
- the relation of inanimate and animate worlds (the convergence of body and object)
- the relation between bodies (a practice of touch and physical manipulation)
PROCESS/
We elaborate a practice of physical listening to go beyond our quotidian socially-coded body. Our explorations consist of sensory games, playing with the elasticity of Time, and acts of becoming Other by putting our imagination into movement. We seek a point of contact with the earth to amplify sensations, to inform and re-situate the body, helping us to feel: skin envelope, rhizomes of nerves, marrow of bones, pulsation of heart. Permeable and aware, a new body-map unfolds.
We open passages between the body and the environment, the quotidian and the dream, the individual and the group. Blinded, we lengthen our nerves beyond the clothing of the skin to expand our perception of the “living space” which surrounds us. Change perspective, change scale, follow the invitation to become Other. Relinquish personal and then human landmarks. Lose oneself, merging pleasantly into matter. Ice nervously cracks, crystals of sugar sigh and dissolve into the tea, water vapor condenses on the face of the stone, smoke wanders lazily across the wool of the pull-over. Human-being rediscovers relation to his material cousins. Untamed existences, moving beyond or falling short of expression : our daily training will be through acts of metamorphosis.
The workshop, taught in English, is open to dancers, actors, poets, visual artists and all others who wish to wander through the interior spaces of the body.
Ephia Gburek
choreographer, dancer, pedagogue
Ephia Gburek holds a BFA in dance from Columbia University, New York City. She studied butoh with Min Tanaka and Kazuo Ohno in Japan and was a member of the Berlin-based company of Anzu Furukawa. Following her interest in trance and ritual, she studied in Ghana, then in Indonesia. In 1998, she co-founded Djalma Primordial Science, a performative and pedagogical collaboration with experimental musician Jeff Gburek. From within this partnership of listening, she focused her dance on the instability of the body and its relationship to the environment. Their performances toured widely in the United States and Europe.
Since 2007 Ephia Gburek is based in France where she concentrates her work on the relation between body and object, a delicious confusion between animate and inanimate worlds. She is a guest teacher in the Contemporary Physical Performance Making masters program in Tallinn, Estonia. Her workshops are hosted by Theater Training Initiative of London, Exploratorium Berlin, Antagon theaterAKTion, RAMDAM un centre d'art, Lavauzelle, LIEUES, and Sous les Pommiers Bas. In 2019, Ephia Gburek was an artist in residence in the neurology service of Centre Medical de L'Argentière. Through her dance, she encountered patients emerging from long periods of coma. These interactions, infinitesimal and profound, nourish her current practice.
Her latest creation “Die Hände von l'Argentière” was presented in UNIDRAM festival in Potsdam. To see a video excerpt visit:
