LSBU are proud to present this inaugural lecture by Professor Eddie Chaplin as part of our inaugural lectures programme for 2022-23.
Professor Eddie Chaplin, Professor of Mental Health in Neurodevelopmental Conditions as well as the Head of the Scientific Committee of the European Association of Mental Health in Intellectual Disability (EAMHID). He has been instrumental in setting up and developing both local and national mental health services people with intellectual disability and autistic adults, both in the National Health service and in the Criminal Justice System. Inaugural lectures are an occasion of significance in our professors’ careers at the University. They provide an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our recently appointed professors who are undertaking research, innovation, engagement and teaching activities in their field of expertise.
Our lectures are open to all LSBU Group staff & students as well as to members of the public and are free of charge. They are taking place in person and will be recorded. They are not being live streamed at present.

Mental health care in intellectual disabilities and autism
Developments in the mental health care of people with Intellectual disabilities and autistic adults over the last 40 years

Description: This inaugural lecture provides a selected overview of the history of research into the mental health of people with intellectual disability and autistic adults over the last 40 years and offers insights into the speaker’s personal journey, his research and becoming a researcher in this area.
Biography: Eddie Chaplin is a Professor of Mental Health in Neurodevelopmental Conditions at London South Bank University, Institute of Health and Social Care. He has been instrumental in setting up and developing both local and national mental health services people with intellectual disability and autistic adults, both in the National Health service and in the Criminal Justice System. As well as researching the mental health of these groups within the criminal justice system he has also been involved in, Mental Health training and peer mentoring via coproduction with people with intellectual disability and autistic adults. He is currently Head of the Scientific Committee of the European Association of Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities (EAMHID) and has edited Advances in Autism and Advances in Mental Health in Intellectual Disabilities Journals.
