The Menominee Park Zoo, one of the best free zoos in Wisconsin, was established in 1945 on 3.8 acres of land within Menominee Park, all located on Lake Winnebago's shores. The Zoo entertains and educates over 100,000 visitors annually and operates on a seasonal basis.
The 2024 season starts on May 25 and runs through September 29. The Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is FREE.
The Zoo collection consists of native species: Elk, River Otter, Bald Eagle, Grey Wolves, Red Fox, Skunks, Ring-necked Pheasant, and Rio Grande Turkey. A few exotic species, including a Russian Tortoise, Chinchilla, Peacock, and various domestic animals, are exhibited at the zoo.
The Zoo, a champion of education and conservation, is committed to expanding its native collection. This expansion will provide a home for these species and serve as a platform to educate the public about their habitats, fostering a sense of responsibility toward conservation.
In addition to the exhibits, the Menominee Park Zoo hosts a variety of educational presentations and outdoor activities designed to inspire and inform. The zoo experience and educational programs are crucial in nurturing knowledge and respect for wildlife among children and families. Families from the City of Oshkosh and surrounding communities have been making memories while visiting the zoo for decades.
The Zoo hosts 13 Wildlife Wednesday sessions throughout the summer. These free educational series feature topics that include Frogs and Turtles with the Heckrodt Nature Center, Eagles with the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, and Snakes with Badgerland Reptile Rescue.
In 2024, we are introducing five new Zoo Educational Days, including tomorrow’s World Otter Day! American Zoo Day, National Zookeeper Week, International Wolf Day, and International Vulture Awareness Day will be celebrated this year with special activities for patrons of the Zoo.
The biggest news for the Zoo is that we are finishing the NEW Bear and Fox Exhibit. The exhibit includes all the habitat features for bears and foxes to thrive, including a pond, digging zones, and dens, all elements that enrich the animal's quality of life. The search for two bears is underway. The Zoo works with reputable agencies to find the right fit. Often, the bears are orphaned or have to be relocated, but the bears we are considering for the zoo cannot survive in the wild. The search depends on so many factors that it is difficult to give a date of arrival, but we are very excited to welcome bears to our Zoo.
All activities planned for the Menominee Park Zoo may be found in the City of Oshkosh Parks Department 2024 Activity Guide - https://heyzine.com/flip-book/d278c0873b.html
