Join Moab Arts staff member Christina Wightman to work on that "needs mending" pile! This is a pay-what-you-can, drop-in style class, where you can just hang out and work on your mending with others. We'll also be focusing on one or two mending techniques each session. Some basic materials will be provided, but bring anything specific you need for your mending project.
Session 1 will be needle felting as mending as well as other techniques for fixing stretchy fabrics. This includes, machine darning, and machine stitching and patching. It will be geared to working with stretch fabrics, like most outdoor and sportwear clothing.
Session 2 will be focusing on the art of visible mending aka Sashiko. Sashiko is a Japanese stitching and embroidery technique primarily used to mend, reinforce, and embellish garments.
We will have a couple of Singer Heavy Duty sewing machines available and well as other mending materials, various patches and notions.
We'll have needle felting needles and various colours of wool roving for needle felt mending.
Light snacks, refreshments and tea will be available, and feel free to bring your own.
Ages: 8+
Scholarships available, email [email protected] for the application or more information.
About the Instructor:
Before working for Moab Arts Christina had her own business upcycling furniture and upholstery fabric into [baseball] hats, tote bags and anything else that came up (or that she needed herself). Mending was always something that she did as a kid growing up in rural Nova Scotia, and once she took a few garment sewing classes in Salt Lake, it opened the doors for more adventurous wardrobe mending.
