Join our hands-on Mending: Basic Upcycling class with Taryn Hipwell and experience her commitment to creating fun, authentic, and bold experiences while shattering stereotypes and shifting perceptions. Perfect for beginners and those looking to refine their sewing skills, this class covers essential techniques like hand-sewing, patching, hemming, sewing on buttons and simple alterations. Bring along your favorite garments in need of some TLC, or pick something up at our Swap & Shop from 2-4pm. You'll leave with the confidence to repair and personalize your wardrobe, embracing sustainable fashion while reducing waste.
If you have a sewing machine, feel free to bring it along to learn some machine techniques. We’ll provide basic materials (fabric, thread, buttons, pins), but you’re welcome to bring your own.

Taryn Hipwell is a global speaker and passionate healthy fashion consultant who has taught upcycling for over 10 years. Hipwell has spoken about sustainability, transparency, circularity, diversity, and toxins in fabrics to over 10,000 students at 30 top fashion schools and universities around the world, including the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Parsons, NYU, UCLA, and YOUNGA, a first-of-its-kind global youth takeover of the United Nations.
The Things Lab is supported in part by Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
